Uses and Gratification

Blumler and Katz researched how and why people select certain media products over others.
They came up with four main uses:

Entertainment: offers a distraction from the world, because it is fun to play.

Personal Identity: helps us consider morals, lets us relate to something such as Emmet.

Relationships: Lets us enjoy the game and feel like we are in the story as the character. Also if they
play the game they can talk to others people about it and socialise.

Information: lets us find out more about the film that we didn't know through an interactive game.
We can learn things from the game such as to never give up.

Lego Movie Poster Campaign

L/O: to explain the effectiveness of the campaign; to analyse using Uses and Gratification theory.

Lego Movie Teaser Posters.
They released over 20 teaser poster of the characters in the movie. They have done this to appeal to the secondary audience which are adults because they could recognise a character from a mother movie that they have watched from there childhood.

Stereotypes
The lego movie used stereotypes because when the audience watch the movie they are familiar with things in the movie such as the jokes. Also in films stereotypes such as a big bulky guy in an action film is usually the hero and it is a role model to children.

In the lego movie they reverse the gender stereotypes so Emmet is the damsel in distress and Wildstyle is the hero that needs to save/help him. Emmet however also fits the gender stereotype because he is in a construction outfit, and Wildstyle fits the gender stereotype because she has lipstick on and her eyebrows are done.

Analyse how The Lego Movie posters use stereotypes to create representations that appeal to the film's target audience and are easily understood

The Lego Movie uses stereotypes to create representations.

In the Lego Movie teaser poster of Lord Business, he is stereotyped as a villain because he has an angry facial expression and he is coloured in red and black which is the usual villain colour scheme.
Also in the poster of Emmet he is stereotyped because he is a man so he is in a construction suit, however he is supposed to be the hero but his facial expression is showing that he is scared or shocked.

These posters appeal to the audience because they are colourful and they show the characters that the kids like such as batman and superman because they are characters that they look up to and the kids want to be the characters. Also the parents will see that the movie is a hero vs villain type of movie and they would understand the diversity of the movie because the Lego Movie doesn't use gender stereotypes.

Lego TV Advert

What are the building blocks of success?
-As a product, Lego is for kids, so the Lego marketing team's main challenge is to make       their products appealing to children; however, it is the parents, aunties, uncles,   grandparents and godparents who hold the purse strings. This is where the joy – and the genius – comes in: The Lego Movie is a ripping adventure for kids, but is also great fun for adults.

What have lego done right?
-They have produced a movie that takes a lot of characters and themes from other movies or games and they have put it in their movie to make it appeal to a larger audience and they have set the characters as certain roles too make the movie more entertaining.

How has it laid foundation for future success?
-After making this movie they cam brach out from it and make different movies such as The Lego movie 2 also they can create movies on the characters such as batman which they have done.

How has it got heart?
If it’s a film, it needs to make people feel. And to this end, with an emotive storyline that explores the meaning of love, partnership and humanity, The Lego Movie does what it needs to do.

How is it all about 'you'?
The Lego Movie forces us to ask questions not only of the characters and the storyline, but of ourselves. The result is a resonance that drills the brand into a deep level of our psyche that’s rarely visited by commercial content.

How does it show that it knows the audience?
-The Lego Movie has a very clear idea of who it’s speaking to – or, in harsher terms, its target market – as it bids to increase its standing among kids (the players), parents (the buyers) and other adults (the nostalgists).

258 word essay

The marketing of The Lego movie exploits British TV by taking all the normal adverts and turning them into Lego and by doing this it makes a lot of people want to watch the movie because they enjoyed the adverts and they would think that the movie would be better, also when children watch the TV and see these Lego adverts they will ask their parents if they can go to the cinema and watch the movie. The Lego movie uses print such as large billboards in popular places such as Los Angeles because they know that a lot of people will drive past and look at it which and think about their children and urge them to go to the cinema and watch the movie. Also they will make magazines that will have mini figures in and they will sell them in stores such as Morrisons, and when kids go grocery shopping with their parents they will see the magazines and want to buy them for the toy and want to watch the movie. The Lego movie has also used the voice actors in the movie to promote it on their social media such as Chris Pratt on his Instagram, and from this, teens will see this and think about the other movies he has appeared in and then want to watch the movie. If parents are on Facebook and they see the advert from one of the movie stars they will think about their children and want to go to watch the movie with their children.
